The best slush in the world? In Sicily: this is where

The best granita in the world is Sicilian, is produced in Oliveri, a small tourist center in the Tyrrhenian area of Messina by twins Alessandro and Vincenzo Squadrito who since 1994 are master gelato makers and run the local “Ritrovo Orchidea” The granita is all Sicilian also because it was prepared with pistachio Bronte cultivated and produced by Mastropistacchio.

The first world competition for the best granita, which took place from 19th to 23rd January last year in Rimini saw thirty gelato makers competing in the initiative of the Italian Gelato Federation and the taste chosen by the president Nicola Netti and the manager Nicola Pieraccini was the “pistachio granita”.

“Oliveri triumphed, Bronte’s pistachio and all Sicily say, in unison the twins, we bet on this victory and we were sure to bring up the name of our local and all of Sicily. Granita has Sicilian origins and we couldn’t succumb to this competition, also because we used the genuine pistachio, the special Bronte pistachio, which gives a particular taste to all our preparations”.
