Sicily: rejected ship with durum wheat from Kazakhstan

On the instructions of the Regional Minister for Agriculture, Edy Bandiera, the Forestry Corps Operations Unit, inspectors from the Regional Plant Protection Service and maritime health personnel carried out an inspection at the port of Pozzallo on a vessel from Kazakhstan, containing fifty tonnes of durum wheat. Checks carried out revealed that the goods were not suitable for human consumption due to large and extensive mould and wet patches. The maritime health authorities have adopted a cargo refusal order, while the Forestry Corps and the phytosanitary inspectors have taken samples, which will be forwarded to the Zooprophylactic Institute of Palermo for routine chemical-physical analyses.
“Zero tolerance”, says the President of the Sicilian Region, Nello Musumeci, with those who think they will continue to introduce goods into Sicily that do not comply with health standards, especially if they are products intended for food.
